About Me
Dr. Mallika Nocco is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences at UW–Madison, where she leads the state’s first program dedicated to agrohydrology — the science of water movement and management in agricultural landscapes. Mallika’s research and outreach focus on helping Wisconsin growers and land managers use water more efficiently and sustainably, especially in specialty crops (cranberries, potatoes, vegetables, and fruit). Her lab tackles real-world challenges such as: Irrigation scheduling and soil moisture sensing Groundwater recharge and nitrate leaching Climate-resilient water management Cover cropping and reduced tillage effects on soil water dynamics Before joining UW–Madison in 2022, Mallika earned her PhD in Environment & Resources from UW–Madison (2018), completed a USDA-NIFA postdoctoral fellowship at UC Davis, and worked as a soil and water Extension specialist at UC–ANR. Her work blends cutting-edge sensor technology, remote sensing, and grower-driven questions to deliver practical, science-based tools for Wisconsin agriculture. A passionate communicator and collaborator, Mallika regularly works with cranberry growers, potato and vegetable producers, fruit growers, and the Wisconsin wine industry to implement water-smart practices that protect both farm profitability and Wisconsin’s precious water resources.
