About Me
David Doud Chairman of the Board, Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA) Owner, David Doud's Countyline Orchard, Wabash, Indiana David Doud is a dedicated apple grower and visionary leader in the Midwest apple industry. As Chairman of the Board for the Midwest Apple Improvement Association (MAIA), he plays a pivotal role in guiding this grower-led breeding program that develops high-quality, consumer-friendly apple varieties suited to challenging Midwestern climates. David owns and operates David Doud's Countyline Orchard in Wabash County, Indiana—a family-run operation spanning about 15 acres, producing over 30 varieties of apples, along with peaches, pears, and strawberries. The orchard emphasizes quality over quantity, with no frills like petting zoos or hayrides—just exceptional, locally grown fruit sold seasonally at the farm stand. David is perhaps best known for discovering the original tree of EverCrisp® (MAIA-1) on his orchard in 2008. One of hundreds of Honeycrisp x Fuji seedlings provided by MAIA in 2001, this standout variety—crisp, sweet, and long-storing—has become a global success, with millions of trees planted worldwide. David's keen eye and decades of hands-on experience helped launch what many call the "apple with the 21st-century crunch." An original member of MAIA since its early days, David embodies the association's grassroots spirit: practical innovation for everyday growers. His low-intervention, thoughtful approach to orchard management has made him a respected voice in sustainable Midwestern apple production.
