About Me
Allan Hyland and Emily Butteris Hyland are the dynamic husband-and-wife duo at the heart of Door Peninsula Winery, a beloved staple of Wisconsin's wine scene since 1974. Based in the scenic Door County region, the winery—housed in a charming historic schoolhouse in Carlsville—has grown into the state's largest producer of fruit and grape wines, crafting over 50 varieties that celebrate the area's bountiful orchards and cold-hardy grapes. With a portfolio spanning innovative fruit-grape blends like Blackberry Merlot and Cranbernet (cranberry-Cabernet Sauvignon), as well as meads and ciders, the Hylands have pioneered a distinctly Wisconsinian approach to winemaking, emphasizing local ingredients and minimal intervention to highlight terroir. Allan Hyland serves as the head winemaker, bringing infectious passion and deep expertise to every vintage. A Door County native with roots in Onalaska, Wisconsin, Allan is renowned for his holistic, low-intervention techniques that let the natural flavors of local apples, cherries, and hybrid grapes like Itasca and Marquette shine. His enthusiasm for sustainable practices and historical winemaking knowledge has earned him a reputation as a "creative innovator" among peers. In 2022, Allan made headlines by launching Door County's first meadery under the Hatch Distilling Co.'s Mixed Meadia line, blending traditional honey ferments with regional fruits—like Cherry Cyser featuring Door County apples and cherries—for sparkling, palate-balancing creations. His work has helped elevate the winery's production to 110,000 cases annually, while fostering statewide distribution and community events. Emily Butteris Hyland complements Allan's vision as the creative force behind product development, particularly in wines and meads for the Mixed Meadia collection. Together, they form a powerhouse team, drawing on Emily's innovative spirit to blend tradition with modern twists, such as carbonated meads inspired by Champagne methods. Their shared commitment to Wisconsin's agricultural heritage has not only sustained the winery's growth but also inspired a new generation of growers and enthusiasts. Married and deeply embedded in Door County's vibrant community, the Hylands embody the warmth and resilience of the region, turning local bounty into award-winning sips that tell the story of Wisconsin's "America's Fruit Belt."
