About Me
Mike North serves as a Researcher I in the lab of Dr. Amaya Atucha, Associate Professor of Horticulture and Extension Fruit Crop Specialist in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). His work centers on fruit crop production, with a particular emphasis on sustainable horticulture practices for Wisconsin's apple, grape, and cranberry industries. As part of Atucha's team—known for advancing cold-climate fruit ecophysiology, nutrient management, and climate-resilient farming—Mike contributes to hands-on field research that supports growers in the Midwest's challenging agroecosystems. With a focus on practical, data-driven solutions, Mike's role involves conducting experiments on topics like winter hardiness, root-microbe interactions, organic production systems, and fruit quality optimization. He collaborates on projects funded by sources such as the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection's Specialty Crop Block Grants, helping to integrate tools like the Network for Environment and Weather Applications (NEWA) for precision orchard management. His efforts align with UW-Extension's mission to enhance profitability and sustainability for small fruit growers, including apple producers facing warmer winters and variable climates. A dedicated member of the Wisconsin fruit research community, Mike's work helps bridge academic science with real-world application, empowering local orchards to thrive amid environmental changes.
